In thinking about what to write I thought about what lessons I have learned over the past five years that I could share. Honestly, if I wrote all those down this blog would be so long no one would ever read it so I had to narrow it down. So, I thought about the one thing that had added to my life that is fun, peaceful, and gives me a sense of accomplishment. For me one of those things is traveling. It is the one thing that I have always wanted to do, but like many of you I made every excuse in the book. The top excuse being it’s expensive, but I’ll go one day. I have since learned that I could have traveled so many places by now. If you plan far enough in advance and smartly, you can literally go anywhere in this world you want. Here’s an example, lets say you want to go to Puerto Rico and you have some time off June 13-20 2017.
Your first step is to research and make sure it’s a good time to go. For Puerto Rico, looking at trip advisor you find that June is a great month to go, as you will find, sunny days, beautiful flowers, and fruits. It is also after their rainy months and the winter crowds have also gone home by now which will make it more affordable.
Here’s the price break down for a trip that I have taken to Puerto Rico just last year
- Flights from June 13-20 $454.80 round trip per person, leaving from RDU going to SJU (Luis Munoz Marin Intl apt)
- 7 night stay at the Caribe Hilton San Juan $2,512.41 (yes, that’s a lot, but you are not going alone right!! So divide by at least 2, room will hold 4) $1,256 pp. if two traveling.
- Car Rental with enterprise for 1 week $398.39, divided by at least 2 because your not going alone for a total of $199.20 pp.
- Suggested Activities (Old Town San Juan, El Yunque National Forest, Cueva Ventana, Bioluminescent kayak adventure or boat tour, Bacardi Rum Distillery Tour) Packages will vary.
There are many other things that you can do in Puerto Rico but these are just a few that I have tried. I have traveled many different places so it’s very attainable.
So the total for the trip for two people could possibly be below $2000.00 (includes flight, hotel, car, activities, and spending money). Keep in mind this is based on 2 people traveling, if there are more people the price per person decreases. You realistically would want to book your flight at least 6 months ahead of time to keep a good price. If you saved at least $100.00 per pay period for 11 months then your trip would be paid in full with plenty left over for spending and trip preparation.
When you think about traveling I encourage each of you to change your focus, from I can’t travel because, to I can travel but I have to plan ahead. You can go anywhere in this world if you plan in advance. I used to wonder how people I knew went to all these different places. I may not know the exact amount in their paychecks, but I knew the ballpark figures because we work at the same place. LOL However, what I realized was that this wasn’t beyond my reach, the only thing stopping me was my lack of planning, and my own personal mental limitations. If it took me two years to pay it off, who cares because in two years I will be taking a trip to a place I desire, it will be fully paid for, and I will have so much fun, not to mention something to look forward to. Think about a place you would like to go, set a realistic time frame, and take the limits off.
So often we place limitation on our dreams, but it’s not the dream that’s unrealistic it’s the limitation. What we need to do is change our way of thinking, and you can apply that to every area of your life. If you want to own a business, don’t say I have too many responsibilities, I don’t have the start up money, or whatever your excuse may be. Instead take the limits off what God can do in your life, he didn’t set those limitations YOU did. Pray to God, plan, and set realistic expectations for those goals and work towards it with expectation. Don’t let fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of not meeting the expectation of others, or whatever your fear is stop you from living your best life now. For God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of sound mind. If its travel, school, owning a business, or what ever you dream is please take the limits off so God can work fully in your life. Plan to take your trip, own your business, go to school, or fulfill that dream. This is what we want for our children right, but first we must be the example of what we teach them. So, for my travelers….see you around the world!
